THE MERMAID

The Mermaid is the latest film by Alexander Petrov (The Cow, Dream of a Ridiculous Man), a Moscow-based animator who is known for the delicate style of his oil paint on glass animation technique. This 10-minute film is a haunting tale of an old monk and his young novice who live by the sea. As the story unfolds, we learn that many years ago, the old man betrayed his bride and she committed suicide.
The Mermaid was awarded the grand prize at the Cinanima `97 Animation Festival in Portugal and a special jury prize at Annecy `97.
